POSITIVE HELL: THE STORY OF FIVE INDIVIDUALS’ DEFIANCE OF THE AIDS DOGMA

A film by Andi Reiss and Joan Shenton

Positive Hell is the story of five individuals who have defied their doctors and lived on for nearly thirty years with a diagnosis of death. The film highlights a network of people diagnosed HIV Positive in the province of Galicia in Northern Spain.

Some of them, like physician Dr Manuel Garrido, have never taken any antiviral drugs. He’s been swimming against the tide of medical orthodoxy for three decades.
Raquel has had two children who are fit and well and are HIV negative and her husband, Pablo is also HIV negative.
Others like Manoel took antivirals for a while and found they made him feel so ill he stopped taking them. How can this be? Haven’t we been told that everybody who tests positive is sure to die? Dothese people have a special magic gene that protects them against HIV? Or could it be that this death sentence has been mistaken all along?
The five protagonists describe their struggle to survive when faced with a death sentence, their experiences as social pariahs, their battles with doctors and the medical orthodoxy and their absolute conviction that the science behind AIDS is cruelly wrong.

Disclose.tv offers House of Numbers, Full Documentary. Watch for Free

In House of Numbers: Anatomy of an Epidemic, an AIDS film like no other, the HIV/AIDS story is being rewritten. This is the first film to present the uncensored POVs of virtually all the major players; in their own settings, in their own words. It rocks the foundation upon which all conventional wisdom
regarding HIV/AIDS is based. House of Numbers could well be the opening volley in a battle to bring sanity and clarity to an epidemic gone awry.

"House of Numbers" is a balanced, fair look at the HIV/AIDS epidemic

from the blog:

Writing a Better Story: Boundless Ministries

Have I ever mentioned that I really, really like to watch documentaries? That's more of a rhetorical question at this point if you've read this blog very long!

Taking into consideration my avid interest in the documentary art form, it's no wonder that next to blogger.com, facebook and checking my e-mail,TopDocumentaries.com is my favorite website. Yes, it even surpasses Netflix.
What I like best is getting the "other" side. These are movies that for the most part are not funded by big money, old money or those who hold the seats of power. Of course, the filmmakers set out to prove their point...so they aren't completely unbiased, but having a background in broadcast journalism myself...I believe this is the type of reporting network newsshould be doing...but can't...mostly, because they are owned by big money themselves. [Disembarking from soapbox!]

Back to the film at hand...House of Numbers is a balanced, fair look at the HIV/AIDS epidemic. And I have to be honest, I've read the huge (650+ pages) book And the Band Played On; I remember following this story with great interest as it broke in the 1980's; I lived in the state where Ryan White lived...we were inundated with information from the news media; but I've never heard the information like this.

Los Angeles Times, Gary Goldstein, Reviews "HOUSE OF NUMBERS"

A contradictory view on AIDS
As documentaries go, Brent Leung's "House of Numbers" is not especially well-organized or focused. It plays as if the producer-director decided -- and rightly so -- that it was time for a "state of HIV/AIDS" update, hopped the globe to interview researchers, physicians, journalists and other experts (as well as several of the disease's victims), and then figured out what his film would really be about. No matter, Leung manages to present a barrage of intriguing theories debunking our generally accepted beliefs and misperceptions about how HIV/AIDS is acquired, tested, diagnosed, defined and treated. It's a vital yet thorny approach whose inconclusiveness is bound to sadden or infuriate anyone who's lost a loved one to AIDS.
Leung serves as the movie's on-camera narrator and conscience, but, best efforts aside, the filmmaker's lack of screen presence undercuts the energy provided by his impressive range of interviewees, whose contradictory positions on HIV/AIDS become the project's raison d'etre. There's no denying, however, the value of exploring such game-changing topics as how HIV-infection numbers are cooked for monetary and political gain; how the effects of global poverty may have led to so many AIDS-related deaths; how such widely used AIDS drugs as AZT have, themselves, often proved fatal; and whether HIV really exists.
