Readers familiar with the story of Timothy Brown—hailed as the first person cured of HIV—may be puzzled by all the talk around confusing reports that HIV traces were detected in his body. What does this mean for the man formerly known as the “Berlin Patient”—and for the prospect of an HIV cure?

UPDATE:

Since his second bone marrow transplant procedure in 2008, Brown has been off antiretroviral drugs and had no detectable HIV—until now. At last week’s International Workshop on HIV & Hepatitis Virus Drug Resistance and Curative Strategies in Sitges, Spain, Dr. Steve Yukl from the University of California at San Francisco reported evidence of HIV “persistence” in Brown’s body.

To help make sense of these findings, here are the facts from the study and some possible interpretations for what they mean—and what they don’tmean.

This thread is inspired by an EXCELLENT documentary from a couple years back called "House of Numbers". In it, the filmmakers basically set out to discover the origin of AIDS, it's relationship to HIV, the conditions which cause it, and the conditions which define it. What they ended up with was a very interesting story indeed. It seems that the official meme that "HIV = AIDS = Death" has many problems, not the least of which are; a) AIDS itself is not a disease or virus but is diagnosed through what amounts to a checklist of various symptoms which are easily attributed to other known diseases like TB, and also could be caused by malnutrition. b) The causal link between HIV and AIDS has never truly been scientifically established, and in fact, the existence of the HIV virus itself is in question, when it's only been isolated and photographed twice, and both studies were inconclusive. c) The HIV test does not seek to identify the virus itself, but only a certain type of antibody. This type of testing is not uncommon in the medical world, as it's easier and cheaper to identify the antibodies, but it's use is only valid if the virus itself has been fully understood and isolated. It it also problematic in the area of false-positives, for example; pregnant women produce these antibodies naturally (I wonder how many of the African women diagnosed were pregnant?) d)The statistics of the world-wide AIDS and HIV numbers have been manipulated, obfuscated and confused (hence the film title) to such an extant that they do not accurately portray the reality of the situation. e) The AZT treatments are highly toxic, severely inhibit DNA replication in the body, and in the end kill more people than the ailment they are supposed to combat. There are many more important points but in the interest of brevity I would suggest you ask specific questions or watch the film, read the articles, etc. I don't know what the original agenda was behind the film's creation, but to me it seems they gave everyone a fair shot at telling their side of the story. This includes Nobel Laureates, journalists, those living with the "syndrome" (AIDS) and the virus (HIV), scientists who are pro the official meme and dissenters of the official meme, but in the end this "House of Numbers" appears to crumble before our eyes.

NEW YORK CITY — A Harlem woman who didn't want to know whether she had contracted HIV is suing her doctor for breaking the news that she tested positive for the deadly virus.

The 31-year-old woman claims Dr. Pavel Yutsis violated state law by testing her without her consent and then delivering the devastating results — even though the revelation likely benefited her health.

"I was tricked. I never signed any paper," the woman, who filed her lawsuit as "Jane Doe" to protect her privacy, told DNAinfo.com last week. "It was a slap in the face."

New non-contagious AIDS-like disease found in Asia

 Even as the promise of an AIDS vaccine seems finally within humanity's reach, researchers in the United States have discovered a new disease —as-yet unnamed, but fortunately non-contagious— with very AIDS-like symptoms.

 

AIDS —or acquired immune deficiency syndrome— results from the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which completely disables its host's natural defenses against infection. In the Philippines alone, as of June 2012, there were 295 reported HIV-positive cases, 16 of which were AIDS cases,according to the National Epidemiology Center's latest HIV Surveillance Report.

 

However, unlike HIV, the newly-discovered immunodeficiency disease does not spread through a virus, nor is it inherited, said Dr. Sarah Browne of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Oakland - University of California researcher Peter Duesberg has been denounced as a denialist, a crank and worse because of his belief that HIV does not cause AIDS. But what if he is right?

In recent months a number of videos about AIDS have been uploaded to YouTube which support a paradigm that is totally at odds with the official line, namely that AIDS is transmitted sexually, and that the cause of AIDS is the HIV virus. In short, no HIV, no AIDS.

The alternative hypothesis has been around for a long time, and its most high powered proponent is Peter H. Duesberg, Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology in the University of California, Berkeley.

Three years ago, a full length documentary by Brent Leung that explores Duesberg's position in considerable depth was released. House of Numbers: Anatomy of an Epidemic was uploaded to YouTube about 18 months ago. This award winning film also has its own website.

The first thing to note is that Duesberg is not and never has been a lone voice. As another distinguished German scientist, Hans Eysenck, said many years ago, we know so little about any disease.

Judge rules 2nd time: prosecutors don't have sufficient evidence that unprotected sex with someone with HIV creates a "grave risk" of death

Syracuse, NY - For the second time in as many months a judge has ruled Onondaga County prosecutors don't have sufficient evidence that unprotected sex with someone with HIV creates a "grave risk" of death.

In a 13-page decision made public today, state Supreme Court Justice John Brunetti ruled the District Attorney's Office did not have evidence to support a felony reckless endangerment prosecution against Terrance Williams for knowing he had HIV and having unprotected sex with another man.

Instead, the judge ordered the felony charge of first-degree reckless endangerment reduced to a misdemeanor count of second-degree reckless endangerment. The judge also ruled there was sufficient evidence to support a prosecution for a misdemeanor charge of third-degree assault.

Williams, 23, has been indicted twice on felony reckless endangerment charges based on allegations he created a grave risk of death to another man from July to October 2010 by engaging in consensual sex without revealing he had been diagnosed as HIV positive in December 2009.

D.C. hopes to test 35,000 employees for HIV over 3 months

HIV is usually diagnosed by testing your blood or a sample of cells taken with a cotton swab from inside your cheek for the presence of antibodies to the virus. Urine samples can also be tested for HIV antibodies, but the results are slightly less accurate.

Unfortunately, these HIV tests aren't accurate immediately after infection because it takes time for your body to produce antibodies to the virus. Most people develop antibodies to the HIV virus within three to six months of infection.

If this test is positive — meaning you have antibodies to HIV — lab technicians run the same test again on the sample you provided. If the repeat test is also positive for HIV antibodies, you need a confirming blood test called the Western blot test, which checks for the presence of HIV proteins.

WINNIPEG — BY THE CANADIAN PRESS Dozens of students and staff at a First Nations high school are being tested for HIV and hepatitis after undergoing a faulty diabetes screening.

A University of Manitoba professor talked to students at Southeast Collegiate on May 4 about diabetes and used a glucometer to test blood-sugar levels on about 80 people.

A university spokesman said the professor changed the needle used on each person, but failed to realize that the part that holds the needle is not supposed to be used on more than one person.

“The lancet, the needle-like poker which punctures the skin, was in fact changed after every use, and the skin was cleaned with alcohol,” John Danakas said Thursday.

The 30-year quest for an AIDS cure advanced as scientists succeeded for the first time in attacking HIV in its hardest-to-reach hideouts with a cancer drug made by Merck & Co.

In a trial among six men with HIV, researchers led by David Margolis at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill used a dose of Merck’s Zolinza to rouse the virus from inside certain immune-system cells, where it evades regular AIDS drugs. That’s a crucial step toward eliminating the virus from the body. The findings were presented at a conference in Seattle today.

While no patients were cured, the trial shows that Zolinza, or similar drugs, may have the potential to purge the virus, Margolis said. He said he expects to hear from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration within “a couple of weeks” on approval for an additional test using more doses of Zolinza.

Bryan Fischer Of American Family Association: HIV Does Not Cause AIDS

Continuing to endorse the notion that HIV is not the true cause of AIDS, Christian extremist Bryan Fischer featured Peter Duesberg, author of "Inventing the AIDS Virus," who believes symptoms attributed to the disease are actually caused by recreational drug use among the gay male population.

"The reason HIV was invented as the cause of AIDS is it was a way to get research money," Fischer, who serves as Director of Issues Analysis for theAmerican Family Association (AFA), said on his "Focal Point" radio show. "If AIDS is caused by behavior...there's no money in that because you just tell people, 'Hey, stop doing the behavior.' So that's why they have to find some bug that they can blame it on."

At the end of the interview, Duesberg asserts that half of all AIDS patients are comprised of promiscuous gay men who have "hundreds, often thousands" of sexual experiences in a short time. "They can accomplish that, like our Olympians break records now in the Olympics, by taking tons of drugs," he says.

Fischer also earlier stated that basketball legend Magic Johnson being alive for 20 years after his HIV diagnosis is "confirmation" that AIDS is not caused by the virus.

Gilead seeks first-ever approval for drug to prevent HIV

In a significant milestone in the battle against AIDS, Gilead Sciences (GILD) of Foster City on Thursday asked the government to make one of its drugs the world's first approved medication to help prevent the spread of HIV, the virus that can lead to the deadly disease.

The news is based on a study that looked at data on over 17,000 adults with HIV who were treated with antiretroviral drugs, which have now become a standard treatment for slowing the progress of the virus. By analysing data on deaths among this population, researchers estimated that antiretroviral users aged 20 in 1996 would be expected to live to an average age of 50 but that by 2008, this group were expected to live to an average age of almost 66 years.

 (NEWSER) – A group of US and European scientists have discovered a way to prevent the HIV virus from harming the immune system, in a breakthrough that could lead to an entirely new approach to fighting AIDS. They discovered that by extracting cholesterol, they could render the virus a sitting duck for the immune system’s adaptive response. “It’s like an army that has lost its weapons but still has flags, so another army can recognize it and attack it,” the study’s leader explained to Reuters.

HIV harms the immune system by provoking an intense initial response that in turn weakens the subsequent adaptive response. “It’s like revving your car in first gear for too long,” the lead author said. “Eventually, the engine blows out.” Past vaccine attempts may have been unsuccessful in part because they were relying on the adaptive response. But drain the cholesterol from the virus, and suddenly it doesn’t produce that initial response, and the adaptive response can deal with it.
